LENGTH CONVERTER

LENGTH CONVERTER

Select the length and enter the value you want to convert to another length unit in the "From" field, and click on the unit you want to convert in "To" field. The results will appear in the "To" field right after you click on any unit.

Length , as you may know, is it is measurementof things from end to end, and it is very difficult to measure accurately when it comes time to convert miles in kilometers. Sometimes we need an estimation of someone else's arrival, or to make it to our destination this is the reason why a length converter can be really useful for calculations. Measurementconverter can be used according to the need and since it can convert any length, it will help you solve math issues as well. To determine how far away someone is from you convert their distance to kilometersor miles. Then, then calculate the exact time of their advent.

The universe is built on measurements. The first length ever discovered was discovered around 4100 years ago. It was recognized as an old measure of length. It was also known as Cubit. Today, everything is made around measurements even the distance of our steps is calculated also known as the average speed for walking, which is about six kilometers per hour.

Now, not all the conversions are precise, as the word "accuracy" means the closest measurement value to the known or standard value. If today people didn't know the length-to-length conversion process, they would not be aware of the typical time required by an engine to cover just a few kilometers. If measurements weren't a part of daily life, we wouldn't have been able to calculate the required distance to travel to the outer space. If there were no measurement calculators, we could not have solved the mysteries of physics.

We most of the times use tools to measure different items in our lives. When you wish to add something to your room but can't change its measurementsto what is the appropriate unit of length , and you have to make an estimationwhich is often wrong, these tools enable us to gauge the size of the world around us. Additionally, they can inform us of how tall we are. However, length measurements are not the same across the planet, as the measurements of height are measured in feet, inches centimeters, meters, and MM To the CM in different countries. Making use of the length converterfor this function is essential.

You can calculate lengths between objects. You can then convert to the appropriate unit of length, i.e. convert inch to cm or convert feet to meters with the help of our length calculator. The online tool for conversion of length is a great tool to help you save your time by manually converting the measurements to other units of length. We all are aware that a kilometer is less than half mile, yet we begin to calculate when we have to travel more than a coupleof hundred miles in order to estimate how long it will take until the time when it comes to deciding an area to go to.

If you are looking to convert meters from feet or in reverse, follow the following steps to determine your desired length:

  1. On the Unit Converter page all you need to do is search at an option to display the length converterin the menu. Click/tap it, and you'll have our length conversion calculatorright before you, as you can see in the image below:
  2. You can easily convert any length unit to another by simply entering the desired number in the "From" section and choosing which one from that "TO" section.

Convert Lengthand Distance Units Instantly

This converter features contemporary length units. There is also a special converter for historical units of length. It is a good idea to check out for older medieval, and other units that are no longer used.

The American System (US Customary Units) and British Imperial Measures

American weights and measures are based off units that were used in Britain before 1826 when imperial system was officially introduced. Until 1960-1963 American and British length measures were distinct in two part per million. By the middle of the 20th century, the difference started to cause issues and the governments of the two countries came together to improve the length measures to make them exactly. Since then, Great Britain and the United States were using the same length measures. For the U.S. the old standard of foot was retained with the name US survey foot.

From 1995 the UK implemented metric units for general use. The only imperial measurements of length that are legally used are now miles meters, yards, feet and inches for road traffic signs.

British Imperial Measure before 1963

The first English formal measurement standards were formulated in the 15th century. British system of units, also known as imperial units, was introduced in 1824. In 1824, the British Weights and Meausurements Act of 1824 repealed all existing British legislation governing measures, and redefined the units of existing legislation. The 1963 Weights and Measures Act standartized the international rules.

International Nautical Measure

The term "international nautical mile" was defined at the First International Extraordinary Hydrographic Conference, Monaco in 1929. It is the only definition that is currently widely used, and is the one that is accepted by the International Bureau of Weights and Measures. Before 1929 , several countries had different definitions and those in the Soviet Union, the United Kingdom and the United States did not immediately accept the value of international standards.

Meter definition

Meter (British English: metre) is the base length unit in several measurement systems, including that of International System of Units (SI).

The definition of meter has changed over time as new methods of measuring science developed. It is now defined as how long the distance traveled by light in a vacuum in 1/99,792,458 seconds.

But how was it characterized in the past?

  • The first attempts to develop the meter definition started in 1790. At that time, The French National Assembly decided that the length of the new meters would be the same as that of the pendulum that had a half-period of one second. Check out how accurate this measure was by using our easy pendulum calculator. Simply type 2 in the pendulum period box, and you'll be able to calculate the length of the pendulum. Actually, it's very close to the one meter (0.993621 1 m).

  • In 1973 the circumference Earth was selected as a neutral standard. The Meter was defined as one-tenth of the total distance between the Equator to the North Pole1 meter equals 1/10,000,000 of the quarter meridional diameter of the Earth across the meridian of Earth through Paris
  • 1799-1889 from 1799 to 1889, the brass, platinum and the platinum alloy with 10% iridium meter bar were produced, which is still a basis having Earth's meridian length. This was when the 1st General Conference on Weights and Measures in 1889 defined the meters as the distance between two lines on a standard bar made of the latter kind of alloy. This International Prototype Meter is maintained in the International Bureau of Weights and Measures located in Sevres, near Paris. The definition of meter was in use until 1960 and also the 11th General Conference on Weights and Measures.
  • Between 1960 and 1983, the meter was re-defined as 1,650,763.73 wavelengths of the orange-red radiation of krypton 86 under certain conditions.
  • 17th Conference defined that the term "meter" refers to 1/299,792,458 of the distance light travels in a vacuum in a second The definition of meter is in effect to this day.

The table below sums up the chronology of a meter definition (by Cardarelli 2003).
